Describe your school's strengths and needs based on a school improvement document, such as the school's SALT visit report, its SALT survey data, or its school improvement plan.

One of the targets on NPS's School Improvement plan is to increase the number of opportunities for students to integrate technology in developing skills, accessing information, manipulating data, exploring concepts, and creatively expressing ideas. With this students will learn how to manage and organize their work on the network, students will be encouraged to make educated judgments about validity and reliability of information on the internet, students will learn to determine which applications are appropriate for each task, and students will understand Plagiarism and know how to avoid it. This has been an apparent improvement in NPS since I have started observing their. They utilize trainings in the library for the students about technology and research. They have a program that teaches students about plagiarism and the proper ways to use information. The students have individual log on usernames for the network where they can save their information and access it around the school. The school has a mobile classroom that consists of laptops that the teachers can sign out for their classes. I have seen a lot of advances towards technology during my time a NPS.

Another target that NPS has is to improve School Climate through the Continued Development and Implementation of Advisor / Advisee Program. Through this improvement students will establish a supportive relationship with an adult in the building through the Advisor/Advisee Program over an extended period of time. NPS has initiated an Advisor program once a week in their 6 day rotation for thirty minutes. This does establish a relationship with an adult through the students school career. On the down side, this advisor program has no guidelines. I have not seen the Advisor program used for it's intention. In this thirty minute session, students are given games and snacks to 'pass time'. Students are supposed to be filling out an advisor program evaluation periodically to monitor improvement according to the SIP, however, I have not seen this done.

Hi Britta,

Both of these concerns are important. Are you thinking about including opportunities for students to do online research or use technology in your classes? Are you participating in the advisory program? If so, how are you approaching the challenge of not having strong guidance? - fogleman fogleman Feb 7, 2010
